Gingerkit raced as fast as her little body could straight to the river. She stopped just before the water's edge, waiting for Lightfoot, Jadeflower, and the other kits. Her whole body seemed to be shaking with excitment, her first swim in the river!

Lightfoot padded up next to Gingerkit. "Don't hurt yourself." Jadeflower glided into the water like a fish, like a knife cutting through butter. "Now, don't go swimming without warrior supervision until you're old enough. And trust me, you'd know when you're old enough." said Lightfoot. She stepped into the water. It was warm, and it made her feel at home. "Okay. Start just by walking in the water. If you get deep enough, up to your chest, you can try treading. Just run in the water, like you're on land."

Stonekit followed at a more leisurely pace. He nodded to the warrior and followed Gingerkit calmly into the calm water. He smiled as he treaded and swam farther out.

Gingerkit first felt the water with one paw, like her mother had told her. It was warm, just the perfect warmth for her. She slowly padded into the water, wanting to go deeper so she could tread. Once her paws could barely feel the ground beneath her, she started to tread.
"This is fun!" Gingerkit mewed happily.

Mistpaw trotted out toward them, "Do you mind if I join?" She mewed happily toward the warriors and kits who seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Lightfoot laughed. "That's your RiverClan heritage flowing, Gingerkit!" She turned. "Well, of course. Come on." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jadeflower felt the creamy warmth of the water all around her. It moved around her, and it felt good. Her cream and brown pelt, already short, was plastered to her long and thin body by the water. She swam over to the other kits. Among RiverClan, she, a former kittypet, was one of the best warriors and swimmers. "Lightfoot's pretty much taught you all you need to know for now." she said, looking at all of the kits. "Now go around and practice. Don't go too far from the reeds."

Mistpaw trotted into the river next to one of the kits, Gingerkit, "Well, do you like the river?" Mistpaw shook water from her face as one of the kits splashed her.

"Of course. This isn't the first time I've swam." Gingerkit mewed seriously.
She then proceeded to make her way over to Stonekit and splash him in the face. She made a quick get away while laughing, in that cute kit laugh. Hiding near Lightfoot, Gingerkit mewed,
"Can we play a game?"

Mistpaw was confused, why was Gingerkit being so rude, what had she done, "Oh. Well, how many other times have you swam?" She asked the kit.

Lightfoot looked at Gingerkit. "Didn't you tell me this was your first time just moments ago?" she said, her head tipped. She nudged the small kit lightly in reprimand. "Don't be rude. I'm not stupid, Gingerkit."

"It's true though!" Gingerkit mewed, her eyes wide with dismay, "Just yesterday my mother taught me how to swim in a puddle by he nursery, but this is my first time swimming in the River."
Gingerkit turned to Mistpaw, she shouldn't be mean, but for some reason she just was to Mistpaw. Gingerkit was only mean to Mistpaw because she was an apprentice, and Gingerkit was jealous of that.
"This is my second time." Gingerkit said happily.
Turning back once more to Lightfoot, the little kit swam cheerfully toward her.
"Is there a game you can teach Stonekit and I to play?" She asked curiously.

Lightfoot thought for a moment. "Well...you see those minnows?" She nodded toward the minnows darting underneath her. "The cat who can catch one the fastest wins round one. For round two, each minnow is two points. A tadpole is three points. A frog...is four points. And fry, baby fish, are one point. The cat who gets the most points wins. You can't take someone's fish. If you kill the fish it's your point. You can't go out of this area. You can't claw at each other for fish. No injuries, unless it's from a frog with teeth." She swam out a little. "Is that good?"

Mistpaw grinnded, she already liked this game, then looked at the kits, "But, Lightfoot, are you sure the kits can play this game? It might be a little much for them, wont it?" She looked at the tiny kits, and thought, how are they supposed to catch a fish.

Lightfoot smiled. "Have you seen a minnow?" She batted out out of the water with practically a flick of her claw. "These are so tiny. A kit could easily catch one of these." She looked at Mistpaw. "Are you going to play?"

What had happened? Stonekit had tuned out. Oh well he waded and swam happily.

Lightfoot watched them carefully. She made sure that they weren't in too deep. She was a little nervous about kits in the river, since her sister, as a kit, had met her death in the river, swept away in the strong currents.

Mistpaw looked to Lightfoot, "Of course I'm going to play!" Then she laughed with exitement. Mistpaw looked and saw a silver body swim by, she lunged out and grabbed it with her sharp claws, then flung it back toward the shore, starting a pile. She easily forked another fish, and flung it toward the other.
Then she saw a frog dart by, she clawed at it, but missed, and landed face first in the water, she stood back up, and looked to make sure no one saw that, then studied the water, looking for more fiah.

Lightfoot couldn't help but laugh at Mistpaw's blunder. "If you want to catch a frog you have to get in front of it before you claw. That way it'll go toward you."

Mistpaw looked at Lightfoot, "Oh." She felt horrible. Way to make yourself look good in front of the warriors. She shook her head at herself, and looked back into the water, ignoring the several fish she saw swim by, waiting for another frog. She would get it this time. She saw one, and lunged in front of it, the frog veered the other way, and Mistpaw lost her balance, and slipped into the river. She felt herself being carried away. She swam against the water, and felt rocks, she caught herself on the riverbank, and scrambled up, and looked back at her group, sh had only been carried a few cat lenghs. She trotted back to the kits and warriors, and back into the water. Hoping no one was laughing at her, or even thinking about how horrible she was at hunting.
Mistpaw knew she wasn't a horrible hunter, she just wasn't that good at catching things in the water. That was her problem, and she was too embarrassed to ask one of the warriors to help her learn, because she was from Riverclan, she should know how to do that from the day she born. Like the kits. She watched them playing, catching frogs and fish easily.

Lightfoot had to laugh again. "Does someone have rotten luck today?" she said, grinning.
