Smallclaw was sitting on the riverbank, watching the snow fall in large tufts. Now was not the time for humor. The once great river before him was frozen, and not a fish in sight. The Clan was getting thin. RiverClan has no kits.
The Clan is doomed... He thought gloomily.
Smallclaw walked on to the frozen river and started pounding on it, scratching the stiff ice. But there was still nothing. A small scratch barely penetrated the ice. A large snowflake fell, and the scratch was covered.
"No hope!" he wailed. "Nothing!"

The snow was falling steadily, Silentbreeze's orange tabby pelt was almost completely covered in snow. Silentbreeze slowly padded toward the icy river in hope of finding an open spot for fishing. The she-cat saw Smallclaw, he seemed so lifeless when usually he was full of life and fun.
She looked down at the ice, all frozen.
"Hello, Smallclaw." The orange warrior mewed. "What's the matter?" she mewed, though she thought she might know the answer.
The she-cat was worried for her unborn kits, they were probably going to be her last litter. But, how could they survive this harsh leaf-bare?

Swiftfang turned to Silentbreeze, dreary eyes glistening with sadness.
"No hope..." he murmered. "It's completely frozen. We're doomed to starvation. Even the water voles are hiding away..."
"We're doomed..." The tawny cat kept crying.

Silentbreeze saw Smallclaw's eyes, dull and hopeless. She felt horrible, usually her spirit was lifted by the joking warrior. Now, though his comment made her feel worse. She padded over to him and sat by his side.
"Don't say that, Smallclaw. Ice melts, prey comes back. It's not over until we're all gone! RiverClan has seen many leaf-bares before and lived through it." the she-cat protested angrily. "A lot has happened and RiverClan is strong and will live on." Silentbreeze calmly added.
"Now, stop wailing like a kit." the orange tabby said. " And help me look for some kind of opening in the ice."
The older warrior wanted to wail too, but she knew better.

"Of course ice melts... but will it melt in time?" Smallclaw mewed darkly. With the 'wailing like a kit' remark, Smallclaw withdrawed. "You obviously don't know the severeness of the situation." Smallclaw unsheathed a claw, and attempted to scratch the ice. There was no mark.
"How do you expect us to hunt decent prey... when the water source is blocked?"

Silentbreeze thought for a moment, then softly mewed "I don't know when it will melt. And I don't know what we are suppose to do about the river. Only StarClan knows, and they won't let us starve, not for moons..." the orange tabby tried to be hopeful. She knew that hope was the only thing that her Clan had now.
"RiverClan will live on, some how, some way. It has too." she whispered.
Suddenly, the she-cat felt a kick. My kits, she thought, overwhelmed with joy.

Smallclaw just sat by the solid river, frozen under the paws of leaf-bare. "How could such power just... stop?" he murmured.
Glancing back at Silentbreeze with melancholy eyes, he remembered that she would be kitting soon. How will the kits make it with no food? Smallclaw thought. They are the future of the clan. If the pass, we all pass...

"No one knows, it happens every leaf-bare. But, if it didn't and we just had green-leaf for all the seasons, then the world could not sustained itself." Silentbreeze responded.
The she-cat thought about the effect that leaf-bare had on her last litter of kits. They never made it to four moons, before the hunger got to herself and them too.

"But this has been the longest freeze in many, many leaf-bares... or at least that's what the elders told me."
He shrugged, and shifted his position so he was laying down, looking at the water.

"The elders may of just forgotten, they tend to do that sometimes..." Silentbreeze retorted, trying not to sound rude to the elders.
The she-cat gazed into the frozen river. "There is still life in there, the fish stay alive. We can too." the orange tabby murmured, half to herself.

Emberpaw walked up towards silentbreeze. Hello, "silentbreeze." she said politely.

"Greeting Emberpaw." Silentbreeze softly mewed. She wondered when the water would dethaw. And if the water would be rushing by the time she had her kitting. Simultaneously with that thought, she felt another kick. I hope they'll be moving this much after my kitting... the orange she-cat hopelessly thought.

Emberpaw thought for a moment. "Would it be fun to walk on the ice?" she asked

Silentbreeze was frozen with shock. How could she think that!the orange tabby worried. Her pale yellow eyes were wide with fear. She thought about how she should tell her no, a few heart beats passed and she finally responded. "Well, the water is frozen, but there is still strong rushing water beneath the surface. And if you hit a certain spot then you would automatically fall in and be pushed away. With no place to come out. I would not recommend it, but it's your choice." the she-cat mewed with a stern voice.

Emberpaw looked stricken. "I didn't mean like THAT! I mean, like on puddles and stuff. is it fun to slide across?" I'm not that brash... am I?

"One time, Flamefur and I did slide across when the water was frozen. It was the most fun we had that leaf-bare. But, that was a long time ago." Silentbreeze mewed, a now painful memory slipped off of her tongue.
